Truckers across the UK need to pool resources in order to cut emissions, says one company director.

Lyall Cresswell, managing director of the Transport Exchange Group, has said that companies are passing on their environmental responsibilities by running near-empty trucks and vans on return journeys.

The group's Haulage Exchange offers an extensively vetted matching service for truckers in haulage, freight forwarding and logistics moving loads of 7.5 tonnes or above through the UK and Europe.

Mr Cresswell said that figures from the Department for Transport revealing that trucks are empty for just over a quarter of their time on the road showed that money was being "poured down the drain".

Instead, companies and truckers can save on the time-consuming process of subcontracting and use the service to find suitable haulage exchanges that will reduce their costs and cut emissions.

Earlier this month, the government revealed that transport was the only sector in which emissions had actually risen seven percent on 1990 levels.
